Facilitate everyday life

As people age, their physical flexibility and resilience also becomes more limited. Older people are often frustrated because they can no longer manage many things without outside help. To give them back some freedom, there are many aids for seniors that make life safer and easier in old age.

Safe in the bathroom on the road

The bathroom is where mobility-impaired people face the greatest dangers. A fall happens quickly on a wet floor or in a slippery bathtub. To prevent this, there are various tools on the market. Attached to the edge, a bathtub boarding aid ensures accident-free entry and exit into the bathtub. Some models have an extra panel above the suction cup that glows green when the boarding aid is secure and firmly in place.

Once you’ve made it into the bathtub, you’re already facing the next fall hazard. A wet bathtub or shower floor can quickly lead to disaster. To prevent a fall there, an anti-slip aid is recommended. If standing while showering is difficult, a shower stool is certainly the right choice. Many models offer a backrest, a hygiene recess and a shower holder and are mostly height adjustable and made of stainless material. The four legs, which are equipped with suction cups, provide a secure hold in the shower.

But even outside the shower, help is often needed in old age. If the joints no longer cooperate, even going to the toilet becomes difficult. In most cases, toilets are located so low that sitting down and standing up is difficult. Toilet seat raisers with fold-up armrests guarantee a fall-free trip to the toilet. The booster seat, which is firmly attached to the toilet bowl, can be individually adapted by means of different seat heights and seat angles.

Fall asleep and get up calmly

Not only the bathroom has its pitfalls, but also the bedroom, because at an advanced age the expression "can’t get out of bed" becomes more and more important a whole new meaning. Stand-up aids for the bed offer a remedy here. Since the raising aid is attached to the bed frame with straps under the mattress, it is suitable for all widths. If the physical limitation is already more advanced, a care bed is the next step. A nursing bed offers many extras that make it easier to care for people with severe physical limitations. The possibility of adjusting not only the height of the bed, but also the height of the head and foot end makes it much easier to lift the person to be cared for out of the bed. A removable side guard also prevents the patient from falling out of bed.

There is also a solution for a bedroom located on the upper floor for people with walking difficulties. An electric stair lift helps older people up the stairs quickly and safely, but is relatively expensive to buy. Meanwhile, however, there are dealers who offer used stairlifts at a moderate price.

Also secured in an emergency

Despite all the aids, emergencies can occur in the home. To be able to call for help quickly, there are some technical possibilities. Special cell phones for seniors replace typical smartphones with their small keypads in old age. Senior cell phones have a simple and user-friendly operation, large buttons and a large and bright display.

If the cell phone is not at hand in the event of a fall, emergency button systems can alert helpers. For this purpose, the patient wears a button with a chain around the neck. The corresponding receiver is given to the responsible caregiver or a relative. As soon as the button is pressed, a loud alarm sound is activated and alerts the caregiver. However, it is important to know that not every model sends an alarm to the emergency services. Since the range of the button is usually only 40 meters, it is only useful if a caregiver is also in the house. However, if the button is forgotten or if a person becomes unconscious after a serious fall, intelligent emergency call systems provide rapid assistance. Such an emergency call system consists of a base station, which is installed in a central place in the house, and sensors, which are distributed throughout the house. These sensors detect critical situations such as the front door being open too long, but can also register motionlessness for too long. If there has been no movement in the living space for a long time, the system alerts the emergency call within a very short time and can transmit the data to relatives or responsible caregivers through a cell phone app. Mareike Schaper
